Agricultural revolution

Population pressure brings about changes:
A relatively high population density (50 – 75 inhabitants./km²) does not only increase the pressure on natural resources and aggravates the ecological over-exploitation: The high potential of manpower in rural areas is also a chance for positive changes!

In dry periods farmers should not have to carry out badly paid work in cities, they should build stone walls at home instead!

Cattle do not only give milk and meat but also manure

Manure and organic waste are turned into compost

Agricultural revolution
In each habitat restructuring of agriculture is carried out technically and socially following individual schemes. If big changes take place in only a few decades this could be referred to as an agricultural revolution. On the Central Plateau it is being introduced by building contour stone walls:

• The construction of stone walls prevents the soil from eroding and rain water is used more efficiently;

• Grain yields increase and so does the available amount of straw for temporarily feeding the animals in stables;

• These factors allow for stronger  integration of livestock farming and tillage and therefore an increased use of fertilizers.;

• As a consequence soil fertility and the yield potential of the soil are sustainably increased.

Food safety and higher income
These improvements also increase food safety for the population. Furthermore, a surplus can be produced and sold. The farmers have then got some money with which they can pay for medical services and education.

Good compost is precious and is used with care

The proof: left without, right with compost
